DVD players/recorders

The days of paying large sums of money for DVD players are gone. If you just want a simple DVD player to view normal DVDs you buy or rent from stores then you can get one now for under £20.

Even DVD recorders now come pretty cheap. You may not feel the need for a DVD recorder yet as you have a VCR. However, when that breaks you may have loads of cassettes which may become unwatchable (I'm thinking of home videos), as it won't be worth repairing and many stores have stopped selling VCRs. Therefore for under £60 you can do it yourself.

By the way if you are confused about what DVDs to get, here's a quick breakdown:
  • I recommend DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs. As the minus DVDs are more universally compatible with other players. This is also what we use in television post-production.
  • RWs are rewritable (ideal for recording everyday programmes) and Rs can only be recorded onto once.
  • DVD-RAMs are more suitable for storing data or if you want to have a bit more flexibility in editing the programmes you recorded. They are more like a computer hard drive.

  • DVD-Video, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCD, SVCD, CD-audio, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 Audio, JPEG, MPEG and copy protected audio CD playback compatible.
  • DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW recording capability.
  • Upscales DVDs to 1080. Believe me - you will notice the quality difference on DVD films you rent or buy.

Blu-ray Players

Occasionally, I find Blu-ray players that are selling for under £100. However, at the moment, all the players are around £250. If you really want to save money then you can get a player for your computer for under £100. However, let's face it.....if you want a Blu-ray player you want HD and therefore as is mentioned in my Television section, if you want to benefit from HD you need a screen of at least 32" if not more. Therefore, I would recommend buying a PS3 as this has a built in Blu-ray player that is actually very good. Therefore for the same prices as other players you get one of the best game consoles on the market. The games are in HD too!! This the cheapest I've found it is at Amazon:
